The Dunedin Chinese Garden

The grand opening in February 2008, the Dunedin Chinese Garden is the city’s newest cultural attraction. The allure of the authentic mysticism that surrounds the philosophy of Chinese gardens can be explored 7 days a week for a small fee (under $10).

The era of the garden is reminiscent of late a Ming, to early ‘Ching Dynasty Scholar’s’ garden. It plays a large part in fostering the relationship Dunedin has with its ‘sister city’, Shanghai and alludes to a focus on the family unit and the importance placed on hosting notable visitors.

It is one of only three truly authentic gardens created outside of China, the local Chinese community have done a wonderful job in drawing awareness to the strong ties Dunedin history has to the continent.

A teahouse and shop is located to the side of the garden for guests’ enjoyment. This aesthetic oriental wonder can be found on the corner of Rattray and Cumberland Streets near the Railway Station and is a must if you are after a tranquil, inspiring experience.
