Dunedin Walks

 

A fascinating mix of scenery invites walkers of all experiences to partake in the various trails offered the Dunedin area. Over 65 walks are offered, from the spectacular coastal environs with its sheer cliffs inhabited by native birdlife, to a stirring cultural experience inland amongst Maori cave drawings and ancient Moa hunting grounds.  

Some of the most rewarding walking tracks include:

Pilot’s Beach – in and around the beautiful Otago Peninsula

Flagstaff Pineapple Track – a track dubbed after the groups of trampers who would eat tins of pineapple at the top of the steepest part. Trekking along the Dunedin skyline provides glorious views of the city and the Taieri Plains. Access is from the car park off the Flagstaff White Road or from Booth Road.

St. Kilda and St. Clair – Dunedin’s main swimming/surf beaches, you are always bound to encounter locals enjoying their recreational neighbourhood just 10 minutes from the city.

Tunnel Beach – engenders geographical thoughts as huge rock formations grace your path. Your journey begins from Blackhead at the south end of St Clair beach.

Victory Beach – is the eponymous walk of the ‘Victory’ steamboat, which was wrecked here in 1861, alongside this historical attraction is the rock formation named ‘The Pyramids’. Explore these intriguing features by following the Portobello Rd turning right up Weir Road allowing you to reach Papanui Inlet via Dick Road.  

Amongst these walking gems you cannot go astray in fascination in the urban surroundings of the city itself. In and around the Octagon you will find many beautiful historic buildings to admire as well as well-established gardens, retail stores and lively cafes, bars and restaurants to excite the senses.  

Dunedin’s Baldwin Street claims the title of the World’s Steepest Street and provides an opportunity for visitors to conquer this formidable New Zealand icon. A Tourist Shop is located at the bottom where successful Baldwin St goers can purchase certificates of achievement as well as peruse the many souvenirs and accessories. Just 1.3km from the Botanic Gardens, the Baldwin St challenge is an enriching feat for any visitor to the city.
